The Wheelchair Philosopher rolls through J. R. Smith's '26 Rules of Media, Money and Life'

A generic inspirational photo in Lieu of a pic of the Professor  -- waka, waka, waka

J.R. "Jim" Smith was my undergraduate  Communications and Media professor during what I might call my Renaissance years at SUNY New Paltz. And while the now retired, and as I remember, Hawaiian-shirt-adorning prof of profs has no immediate correlation to disability, his motivational insights are that of ball-busting legend and have kept my spirits up through quite a number of adversities related to this blog. For this much I say, "Thank you, Professor Smith!"

SMITH’S 26 RULES OF MEDIA, MONEY, AND LIFE

 © J. R. Smith, 2005

PEOPLE

1. Networking is the single most important skill you’ll ever develop.
2. Dump your “loser” friends they are a waste of time and energy. You will be known, whether you like it or not, by the company you keep.
3. Treat everybody the way you want to be treated.
4. Don’t ignore the “little people.” Often the vice president’s secretary knows
more than the vice president.
5. Hire people smarter than you are.  It’s more important to be successful than
to be right or in control.
6. Keep your mouth shut. You learn more by listening and it is not always
necessary for people to know what you are thinking.
7.Don’t be afraid to sell!  Selling is building personal relationships…solving somebody’s problems or meeting their needs.

PERSONAL VALUES

8. Stay focused. Be passionate. Work hard and provide value. Don’t waste time.
9.Have integrity. Don’t cheat anybody. Be honest.
10. Be flexible, adapt.  Darwin was right.
11. Resist the urge to enhance your personal life until you have started to achieve
your professional goals.
12. Max-Min.  In all endeavors, maximize the upside potential and minimize the downside risk.
13. Relationships, life, and business are cyclical.  Learn to recognize the cycles and how to deal with them.

MONEY

14. Buy low, sell high, and know when to leave the table.
15. Use OPM (other people’s money) but retain ownership. But, borrow when interest rates are low, pay back when they are high.
16. Ask for more than you need but don’t be ridiculous.  When you get the money, follow the budget and keep some in reserve.
17. Think “investment” not “spending” when handling money. A corollary;
If you out-think them, you don’t have to out-spend them.
18.  Work for yourself, always own a business, even when you work in a corporate environment.  It also makes good tax sense.
19.  Divorce and business have much in common.  Be sure to leave relationships
with more than you brought to them.  And you will be leaving!

MEDIA RULES

20. Think software, not hardware. Content is king.  Don’t focus on technology or delivery
systems they quickly become commodity businesses.
21. There’s always somebody with more gear or more money than you have.
22. Define and know your target audiences.  They will make you money
if you let them.
23. Do your homework.  Research everything, including the failures. Profit from the successes and learn from the failures of others.
24. Pay your dues.  Learn the business from the ground-up.  In the beginning, you’ll have to work long hours for little pay but know, in the end, it’s worth it.
25. Egos.   Never lose sight of the fact that the media business is full of people with large egos.  Accept it and learn to deal with them.  Turn their ego into your “employee.”
26. Know the basics of contract law and accounting.

Regarding millionaires, did you know?
Of those who didn’t inherit their money, less than 40% got rich by working for a corporation.
When somebody asks “What’s your sign?”
           **Tell them © and ®**.
Remember Alan Alda’s famous quote: It isn’t necessary to be rich and famous to be happy. It’s only necessary to be rich.

If you commit  any of these missteps on a regular basis will definitely shorten your career path:

-Participate in Office Gossip
-Miss Deadlines
-Send a Lot of Personal E-mails
-Take Credit for Others' Work

Wheelchair Philanthropy: Pay for your child's college education with a painting

1st Birthday by David Poyant

My client David Poyant is a fine arts painter with a very special mission. Fund children's college educations with the sales of his paintings. David got the idea after deciding that he wanted to help his own family pay for their kids' college expenses. He is now hoping to send what he calls a "magic 200" children to college with his artwork. The program now running by Incentives Fundraising at incentivesfundraising.org is quite simple. Each painting sold is tracked by a chosen student ID number. For each item sold with the corresponding ID number, that child is given a minimum of $31.00 (as of the current lowest price).

David explains his selling point and premise simply:

"Affordable, custom made just for you. Your painting will be capturing a special moment in your life. You provide me with a photo and I will turn it into a work of art."    - David Poyant

Keith and Ann by David Poyant

I urge all my readers to participate in this wonderful cause if not for your own child, for someone you love. You'll be so thankful you did!

Sesame Street gets inclusive and accepting with a hilarious 'Glee' parody

SesameStreet.org

The following Sesame Street parody of FOX's progressive-minded show choir showcase Glee   predictably entitled "G" and brought to you by the very same letter seems to encompass a level of diversity that I've not see since my time in the Student Union Building at SUNY New Paltz -- ahh, college! But I digress. One cannot help but be comically enthralled by the big  Lenoesque chin on "Mr. Goo" as he takes the "G Club" to the "G-gionals," the multiple colors of people, the kid rolling in a wheelchair as an Artie clone and... a not-so-out gay Kurt Muppet? Yes, the Sesame writers may not have  a shiny red megaphone ala Bert and Ernie's toy chest to shout it from the rooftop of Hooper's Store -- but I know fabulous ferocity curiously and capriciously creeping out of a camera lens when I see it, dang nabbit! But I have to laugh and most likely so will you!

Rolling Philanthropy: CleanBreath.org makes clicking for 'change' free and painless

“Yesterday is gone.
Tomorrow has yet to come.
We have only today.
Let us begin.”

Mother Teresa

Like the above quotation from the late Mother Teresa suggests, today is the only guaranteed time a person has to impact his or her surroundings. One small way that I have found to do this very bliss-inducing thing  is through sponsored click-to-give charity. The idea is simple: click on a link and a sponsor pledges a certain amount of money.  My website of choice in the matter is the wonderful CleanBreath.org.

CleanBreath.org is a central database of dozens of click-to give charity sites stretching to all corners of this big, beautiful globe free of charge! I have been using the site and giving for free for over a year and thanks the good fellows and ladies at CleanBreath, I have been able to give, amazing as it may seem, to around 20 charities per day!

So if you like  giving back but you don't have the deepest of pockets, or the economy has eaten them alive to oblivion, do yourself a favor and mosey over to http://cleanbreath.org and change the world by giving the world some change... one click at a time.

Craig Dietz's life without limbs makes me jealous

I am 30 years old. I am a writer, blogger, amateur rapper/emcee, poet and an up-and-coming entrepreneur. I have a great family and great friends -- and I was born with Cerebral Palsy Spastic Diplegia. I have all my limbs. And yet, Craig Deitz who, as his family would have you believe, was gifted his lack of limbs by the beautiful grace of God has seemed to accomplish  far more in his life than I have in mine.  At this I am thoroughly jealous and inspired all at once.

Craig is a state attorney in his home town of Pittsburgh, PA. He lives apparently independently: driving his car, cleaning his house, going bowling, skiing, and yes, swimming competively! In some peculiar sense, seeing Craig's life in this video makes me ashamed of not having accomplished a bit more in my life. Thanks to craig's metaphorical kick in the pants, I am truly more motivated than ever to remove all obstacles from my life! Thanks be to Craig!

Craig will be speaking on December 6, 2011 at Misericordia University. For more information, visit the link here. Or for more about Craig Dietz, go to craigdietzspeaks.com.

Thank you, Howard Stern for helping me through 9/11

By all accounts, the New York City skyline was pristinely clear on a gorgeous  Tuesday morning in September. I had just woken up for my usual Tuesday day off from my college classes.  I went into the downstairs living room of my father's house and  turned on MTV for no reason of particular importance to  Christina Milian's song and video for her hit  single "AM to PM." My father came down the stairs to the doorway to leave for his construction job at the new Palisades Mall. I very distinctly remember telling him "I love you," I didn't always.  After deciding that I had some work I should be getting to, I  went to my computer upstairs climbing in my handicapped-accessible manner. (I mention that part for those readers who wonder about such matters.) I checked my email and to started to work on my assignments for my classes as I was then  a 20-year-old Sophomore at my local community college. I went about my business for at least an hour with my headphones playing my personal internet radio playlist filled with everything from Michael Jackson to Marvin Gaye and The Cranberries. Strangely even thought I recall that Cristina Milian song, I don't recall any songs that might have been playing as I was given the incredible news by my dad's girlfriend at the time,  "Two planes crashed into the World Trade Center", she shouted."

I rushed back downstairs for some reason and I turned on the radio. It was set to 92.3 K-ROCK, the station that carried Howard Stern's radio show from New York City. It was already after ten o'clock and the damage had largely been done. Howard broke from his typical raw and jokingly lecherous character to be a kind of comfort to his listeners -- taking calls from friends, family and whomever happened to be on the phone lines at that moment. He seemed almost prayerful and while howard Stern had always been notoriously irreligious, his tone, though not religious, seemed to somehow call me to prayer on the living room floor as he gave updates. I spat out spirited rounds of Hail Marys and Our Fathers from my Catholic upbringing and wondered how for it would go. Who would or had already died that I know? What if the plane in Pennsylvania got to the White House or the Capitol Building? What if they hit  the Indian Point nuclear power plant near my area? Was I going to die? I remembered what I last said to my father and in knowing that he would try to help that day, I wondered if I had seen him for the last time. I thanked God for everything I had been given in my life and asked forgiveness for where I had fallen short. I must have prayed for over three hours non-stop lying belly-down with my face buried in my folded hands

The YouTube videos below contain the audio of that special Howard Stern radio broadcast. Thank you, Howard. I will never forget this.

Let's roll... on!

To those lost on that day and especially Michelle Bratton: may the comfort of God  find you well and happy always!

The Wheelchair Philosopher revisits three simple ways you can be happier and more productive without missing out on, well... anything

Today we're revisiting my steps on how to be more productive -- something that is a focal point of this blog. Enjoy!

Three Simple Ways You Can Be Happier and More Productive in Under an Hour
Take 45 minutes to one hour to do these three things:
1. Stop thinking about what you can't do and switch it to thinking about what you CAN do. Your brain can't picture "NOT", it can only picture what is. If I, for instance, say "Don't think about the color blue", you'll think about BLUE first.
2, Visualize your BIGGEST goals and write them as if they are happening already. Do this for at least a half hour.
3. Finally, make a list of things you want to do in your life in three columns with the "Things to do" in the first column and "How to do them" in the second column. Then make a list of people who can help you accomplish these goals in the third column and finally... call those people later.

To think, to blog, to grow rich from the seat of a wheelchair; these are good things

Think And Grow Rich: The Secret To Wealth Updated For The 21St Century

I've been reading  the Depression Era classic of economic empowerment  -- the propitiously titled Think And Grow Rich: The Secret To Wealth Updated For The 21St Century. I say "propitiously" because since adopting an excuses-free  attitude in the past 15 months or so, I find myself making more money than I ever have -- not only that, but I seem to  have inspired a flurry of genuine prosperity in my inner circle that would make your local toe-tapping tainted televangelist question his clout with the Upstairs Landlord . I'm on my way to doubling my income in the coming months. I attribute this marvel of multiplication to one common, yet ever too overlooked factor: goal setting. Simply and succinctly, goal setting and seeing my vision through to the end (regardless of whether such an end is real or imagined) is what has gotten me to a new lot in life. Below is a list of the author's Six Steps to Riches as they relate to my goals for this blog.

Napoleon Hill's Six Steps to Riches

Step 1. Write down the exact amount of money you wish to earn.
Me: I will earn $1000.00 per month.
Step 2. Write down what will you give back in return for the money you have gained.
Goal: I will give 1/12th profit to a disabled services charity of my choice.
Step 3. Write an exact date in which you will achieve this money or goal.
Goal: I will achieve this goal by December 3, 2011.

Step 4. Write an exact plan on how you will achieve this money.
Goal: I will write compelling content and gain ad revenue through blog traffic.
Step 5. Combine steps 1-4 in  a summary
Goal: I will earn $1000.00 per month or more on this blog by December 3, 2011 through writing compelling content and collecting ad revenue.

Step 6. Repeat your summary twice daily, once when you wake up and once when you go to bed.

I'll get back to you as to whether I fulfill my goal. Until that time, try these steps for yourself and... roll on!
